Tribin Holbrook Takes on Kitchen Manager Position at Copper Country Senior Meals

Copper Country Senior Meals (CCSM) welcomed Tribin Holbrook to the role of Kitchen Manager in April. Holbrook is excited to help create even better food for seniors and find ways to continually improve nutrition and flavors, as well as revamp the menu and expand it to include bakery.

“His enthusiasm and ability to work in a team is perfect for this environment,” CCSM Executive Director Kathleen Harter said. “We have a strong positive working environment and he fits in extremely well.”

Holbrook’s role will be varied on a day-to-day basis, including tasks like reviewing the menu to ensure that it’s nutritionally balanced, helping train new staff, scaling meals, ordering food and supplies, overseeing kitchen operations, and supervising kitchen staff, including cooks, packers, and food preppers. In addition, Holbrook steps in wherever and whenever he is needed, taking on routes when regularly scheduled drivers are unavailable, doing dishes so the others can continue to work, and adjusting plans effectively on the fly due to inclement weather.

Holbrook has nearly a life-time of experience, starting as a dish boy at 12 years old, and later cooking through his teens. Nineteen years ago, after a decade break to pursue other careers, Tribin moved to the Copper Country and took on a variety of jobs including cooking for local restaurants, Baraga Correctional Facility and Finlandia University before being hired full-time as the CCSM Kitchen Manager.

“When I first started working here, I asked myself ‘Is this all true, are all these people really this nice?’” Holbrook said. “It really is the way it is. We’re doing something more than just making a living. They’ve made it easy to really buy into the mission.”

It is clear that through his time in the Copper Country Holbrook has truly connected with people in the food industry and displays an enthusiastic desire to provide the best for seniors.

Celebrate Older Americans Month with Copper Country Senior Meals

This month Copper Country Senior Meals (CCSM) is joining the Administration for Community Living (ACL) in celebrating Older Americans MonthACL is focusing on aging in place – how older adults can plan to stay in their homes and live independently in their communities for as long as possible. The 2022 theme is Age My Way, an opportunity for all of us to explore the many ways older adults can remain in and be involved with their communities.

“This celebration fits perfectly with what Copper Country Senior Meals does,” Executive Director Kathleen Harter said. “We deliver nearly 300 meals a day to help people who live independently at their houses or apartments. For many of our residents, the daily visit provides a social interaction and a wellness check which is absolutely vital to their ability to continue living in their homes.”

As part of Older Americans Month, CCSM is partnering with the Portage Health Foundation for a special series of podcast episodes highlighting what makes Senior Meals such a special organization in Michigan’s Copper Country. Episodes will include an overview of CCSM with Harter, a visit with some of the staff that made more than 86,000 meals for our community in 2021, a ride along with one of the beloved delivery drivers and a stop at one of the Congregate Meal Sites that take place each week throughout the Copper Country.

In addition, Copper Country Senior Meals has launched a GoFundMe. This crowdsourcing effort will help purchase new equipment to keep the hot meals hot and the cold meals cold for the everyday deliveries in Houghton and Keweenaw counties. CCSM is looking to raise $5,205. If the goal is met, the organization will be able to purchase 15 new coolers and eight new hot bags. These tools were piloted in 2021 with funding from the Portage Health Auxiliary.

“The results were incredible,” Harter said. “Our hot meals were at a higher temperature than we’ve ever seen before right through the last delivery. That makes a huge difference in the ability for our seniors to enjoy these meals.”

Senior Meals Hosting Open House for Local Growers

Copper Country Senior Meals (CCSM) is hosting an open house for local food producers and growers on Monday, May 9 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. as it aims to increase the amount of locally grown food the organization serves seniors.

Open House Graphic“Our intention is to learn from growers how we can incorporate more local foods and for growers to better understand our clients and the meals they receive each day,” said Kathleen Harter, Executive Director of CCSM. “This is a great opportunity for a win-win scenario where our growing community of farmers are able to sell more food and we’re able to provide our seniors with more locally grown, healthy foods.”

The event will include a short tour of the facility, a chance for the growers to enjoy the same healthy meal local seniors will be receiving that day, and allow for a question-and-answer sessions.

Copper Country Senior Meals Awarded $2,500 Grant from Portage Health Auxiliary

Rich Simpson (middle) and Kathleen Harter (right) accept a check from a representative with Portage Health Auxiliary.

Senior Meals has been awarded a grant from the Portage Health Auxiliary to purchase a heated meal transport system. The heated meal containers will allow more seniors to have access to hot, home-delivered meals. They will also allow time for the delivery drivers to spend more time with the seniors, while maintaining food-safety standards.

The Portage Health Auxiliary grant is a true blessing to Copper Country Senior Meals. The containers connect directly to the delivery vehicles to maintain temperature. This will let the routes be expanded while still maintaining food safety standards.

“The meals stay hot and I am able to deliver to more seniors and spend some extra time visiting with them,” said Gregg Stahl, delivery driver for Senior Meals. Using the addition of the heated containers allows the program to look to the future, by finding previously unreached areas. “The heated containers will be such a wonderful tool to allow Senior Meals to fulfill its mission of providing nutritious meals, with social interactions, and a wellness check,”  Director of Operations Richard Simpson said.

Copper Country Senior Meals would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Portage Health Auxiliary for their support and generosity of this grant. The Auxiliary is a volunteer-run organization that operates the Guilded Rose gift shop at UP Health System-Portage. All Profits go back to the community through grants and scholarships awarded by the Auxiliary, like this one given to Copper Country Senior Meals. If you ever find yourself in the hospital please, stop by The Guilded Rose. Extend a helping hand to the wonderful organization and people that make up the Portage Health Auxiliary.
